Kia YROS newest entrant in the compact-to-mid SUV space in India is the Kia Syros. Unveiled in December 2024 and officially launched in early 2025, this sub-compact crossover SUV has been built to sit between the Sonet and the Seltos in Kia SYROS Indian lineup.

The Syros aims to disrupt the segment by offering a rich mix of design, features, space, safety and multiple powertrain options — appealing both to urban drivers and those who want more from their SUV without stepping into the premium price brackets.

Design & Styling

Exterior Styling

Kia SYROS has given the Syros a bold, upright, and boxy silhouette, which draws design cues from its global models like the EV9, EV3, and the Carnival. Some of the notable exterior design features:

  • LED Lighting: vertically stacked LED headlamps, integrated daytime running lights (DRLs), and L-shaped LED tail lamps. The headlamps are placed at bumper corners, giving a distinct look.
  • “Digital Tiger Face”: Kia’s signature grille/theme, updated for modern aesthetics.
  • Large wheel arches and alloy wheels: The wheel arches are emphasized and the wheels (17-inch crystal cut alloy wheels) add to its SUV presence.
  • Flush door handles, puddle lamps with Kia SYROS logo projection, and strong body lines.

Dimensions & Space

In terms of dimensions, the Syros is relatively compact, but larger than many sub-4-metre SUVs in key aspects:

DimensionFigure
Length3,995 mm
Widthapprox. 1,800 mm
Heightapprox. 1,665 mm
Wheelbase2,550 mm
Boot / Cargo capacity~465 litres

With its tall-boy design and longer wheelbase, the interior space is claimed to be generous. Rear passengers benefit from sliding and reclining second-row seats—a first for its segment in India.

Interior & Comfort

One of the strong points of the Syros is its feature-rich cabin:

  • A panoramic dual-12.3-inch display setup: one screen for the infotainment system, the other for the digital instrument cluster, combining to form roughly a 30-inch screen panel.
  • A 5-inch digital display for climate/A-C controls.
  • Ventilated seats not only in front but also in the rear—a rare offering in its class.
  • Sliding & reclining rear bench, 60:40 split folding rear seats.
  • Dual-pane panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting with many colour options (64-colour lighting), a Harman Kardon speaker system.
  • Convenience features like wireless charging, wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, Over-the-Air (OTA) software updates.

Powertrains & Performance

Kia SYROS offers the Syros with two main engine options, each paired with multiple transmission choices:

Engine TypeOutput / TorqueTransmission Options
1.0-litre turbo petrol (Smartstream G1.0T-GDi)~118 bhp and ~172 Nm torque6-speed Manual, 7-speed DCT with petrol engine.
1.5-litre diesel (CRDi / VGT)~114-116 bhp and ~250 Nm torque.6-speed Manual, 6-speed Torque Converter Automatic (Diesel-AT)

In terms of real world fuel efficiency, the Syros is estimated to deliver around 18-20 kmpl depending on variant and engine/transmission choice.

Performance metrics like top speed and 0-100 km/h acceleration are modest, suitable for its size and purpose. For example, the 1.0 petrol variant is reported to have 0-100 km/h in around 11.8 seconds.

Safety & Driving Aids

Kia SYROS has loaded the Syros with advanced safety and driver assistance features:

  • It offers a Level-2 ADAS suite, which includes features like adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, forward collision avoidance, blind spot monitoring, etc.
  • Six airbags as standard.
  • 360-degree camera, blind spot monitoring.
  • Vehicle safety systems like stability control, hill-start assist, electric parking brake with auto-hold.

Importantly, in Bharat NCAP tests, the Syros has earned 5 stars for both adult and child occupant safety.

Pricing & Variants

Kia SYROS offers the Syros in multiple trim levels:

  • Trim names include HTK, HTK (O), HTK Plus (HTK +), HTX, HTX +, and HTX + (O).
  • Price range (ex-showroom) is approximately ₹ 9 lakh to ₹ 17 lakh depending on variant, engine and transmission.

For instance:

  • Base petrol manual versions start in the lower side of that range.
  • Top-end diesel automatic with many features commands premium pricing.

Strengths

Here are the strong points of the Kia SYROS Syros:

  1. High value proposition: Packed with premium features (ventilated seats, panoramic sunroof, large screens, ADAS) which are uncommon in many rivals in its range.
  2. Spacious cabin + clever packaging: Sliding & reclining rear seats, good boot space, ample legroom due to longer wheelbase.
  3. Safety: 5-star Bharat NCAP rating, lots of driver aids etc.
  4. Multiple engine & transmission choices: Petrol/Diesel + manual, automatic / DCT makes it accessible to a wider audience.
  5. Modern, bold design: Both inside and out, it is distinctive. Kia SYROS seems to be trying to lead in design flair in this segment.

Weaknesses / Concerns

No product is perfect — some drawbacks or areas to watch out for:

  • Fuel economy on the diesel automatic may lag behind expectations, especially in city traffic. Some user feedback notes less impressive mileage in certain AT variants.
  • Ride & suspension tuning: While the ride is generally praised, some users report the suspension is a bit stiff on bad roads, especially with fewer occupants / no load.
  • Ground realities of features: Premium features like ventilated rear seats, large displays etc. are great on paper, but maintenance, servicing, and long-term durability will matter.
  • Price escalation with higher variants: As features pile up, the cost can approach that of more premium SUVs; buyers will need to decide whether to compromise or move higher in segment.

Market Position & Competition

The Syros is aiming at buyers who want more than the very basic sub-compact SUV but don’t want to spend the premium SUV bracket. Its competitors include:

  • Kia Sonet (below it) — Syros offers more space, features, and design refinement.
  • Other popular compact / subcompact SUVs from Hyundai, Maruti, Tata, Mahindra etc.
  • On the higher end, some buyers might be tempted by entry trims of bigger SUVs (e.g. Creta, Hyryder etc.), depending on discounts/features. Syros’s challenge will be to justify itself in comparison to them while maintaining good value.

Kia SYROS has positioned the Syros such that it fills a niche: more premium than Sonet, but more affordable than Seltos or Creta, with a strong feature pack.

Market Reception & Production

  • Booking for the Syros opened on 3 January 2025.
  • Deliveries started around early February 2025.
  • Kia SYROS began production at its plant in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh.
  • Pre-orders/orders/sales have been strong signaling healthy interest. For example, more than 10,000 pre-orders were recorded around production start.

Conclusion

The Kia Syros appears to be a solid and well-thought-out addition to India’s SUV market. Its combination of design, features, safety, and multiple powertrain options make it a compelling choice for many buyers. It especially speaks to those who want premium features without going into high-end SUV price territory.

For prospective buyers, the questions to ask would be:

  • Which trim and engine suit their driving (city vs highway)?
  • How important are premium features vs cost of maintenance and long-term durability?
  • What are the real fuel-cost implications of automatic vs manual, petrol vs diesel?
  • Whether over time, the resale value and service network support justify the purchase.
